Jobs in the Motor Trade

Most managers in the motor trade will want answers to some basic questions whenever they interview any job applicant for any position in their company. If you can convince them that you are the right choice and give the right answer you are almost there.

You shouls be interested in the work and show that you want the job. Your chances of being included in the short list of qualified candidates will be better if you can provide a documented work history that shows a good employment background in the automotive industry.

A work history that shows a tendency to jump from job to job would be a negative point - if you have a good reason for frequent job changes make these known at the interview. Most embloyers are lookimng for someone with at least three years good work experience.

If you do not have three years experience in the automobile industry but are qualified for the job, the following tips may help you pass the interview and get the job:

1. You can present your training and any certificates, even better if you have ASE certification as these are acceted by most motor trade employers.

2. Do you have any factory-training certification? This would give you a better chance of being hired especially with ASI.

3. Anticipate questions about testing equipments, and show your familiarity and knowledge gained during training and on seminars that you have attended.

4. Demonstrate your skill and knowledge about car repairs and related jobs. Show your knowledge about motor products, parts and equipments.

5. Once past the testing and interview process, you may be asked to do a trouble shoot demonstration. Use this to show your knowledge and skills at identifying faults in motor vehicles. Once you have identified the fault you need to show that you know the step-by-step procedures that are needed to rectify the fault.

6. If you are computer literate you will have an advantage over those candidates who do not know how to use a computer. Most businesses in the motor trade use computerized repair tools and machines to diagnose problems.

7. Towards the end of the interview ask questions about the job. Have some questions ready, check details of pay and conditions; Is the pay on a flat rate basis? Are there any pay incentives? What are the employers plans for future expansion? Is there any training to be had? This is also the time to show that you posess interpersonal skills, your prospective employer will want to be assured that you will work well and get on well with his other members of staff.

It is not easy to get your first job as an auto technician in a repair shop. Most require their applicants to be the best in their field and to show dedication and interest in the work. If you come to the interviewed knowing what to expect you can load the dice slightly in your favour.
